3.9.2 Effluent contamination limits. The required effluent water and sep-
arated oil samples shall conform to the following contamination limit require-
ments:
oil in water. When analyzed in accordance with 4.5.2.1, the ef-
(a)
fluent water shall not contain a haze, iridescent appearance, vis-
ible sheen, visible oil, and not more than 15 parts per million
(ppm) of free (dissolved) oil.
(b)
Water in separated oil. When tested in accordance with 4.4.4.5,
the separated oil shall not contain more than l-percent free
(undissolved) water (see 4.5.2.6) .
( c)
Solids. when tested in accordance with 4.4.4.6 and 4.4.4.8, the
effluent water shall not contain more than 2 milligrams per liter
of solids for coalescer elements, nor more than 1 milligram per
liter of solids for prefilter elements (see 4.5.2.3).
3.9.3 Performance, The separator including all controls shall conform to
the following performance requirements. The flow rate of the separator shall
be as specified in the individual detailed specification or end item specifi-
cation, and the flow rate shall be continuous or intermittent.
3.9.3.1 Differential pressure. Differential pressure across the separator
with new coalescer elements and prefilter elements installed and clean fresh-
water (see 4.4.2.1) shall not exceed 5 pounds per square inch (psi) at any
flow rate up to 100-percent of rated flow when measured across the inlet and
outlet couplings (see 4.4.4.4). The differential pressure without the
coalescer elements and prefilter elements installed shall not exceed 3 psi.
3.9.3.2 Oil removal. The separator shall remove various fuels, lubricants:
and mixtures of fuels and lubricants (hereinafter called "oils") (see 3.9.1)
from clean freshwater (see 4,4.2.1), to the limits specified in 3.9.2(a) at
waterflow rates up to 100-percent of rated flow, with the influent water con-
taining up to 100-percent by volume of oils. The separated and discharged
oil shall contain no more than 1 percent water by volume (see 3.9.2(b)). Dur
ing the 100-percent oil injection period (see 4,4.4.5), no oil shall pass to
the final coalescer stage.
