3· REQUIREMENTS
3.1 Description. The oil-water separators (hereinafter called "separators")
shall consist of one or more filter-coalescer vessels connected in series and
preceeded by a vertical prefilter utilizing expendable filter-coalescer ele-
ments (hereinafter called "elements") and expendable prefilter elements (here-
inafter called "refilters"). The separators shall be provided with an auto-
matic oil discharge system connected to one or more of the stages, an auto-
matic water discharge control valve, automatic air eliminator on the prefilter
vessel, pressure gages for indicating pressure drop across each vessel, oil-
level sight gages on each vessel, water drain valves on the bottom of each
vessel, and sampling valves on the inlet to each vessel and on the water and
oil discharge lines (see 6.3).
3.1.1 Design. The detailed design configuration and flow rate of the sep-
arators shall be as specified in the individual detailed specifications or
in the end item specification. No deviation from the prescribed dimensions
or tolerances is permissible without prior approval of the contracting officer.
3.2 First article (reproduction model). The supplier shall furnish a
separator for examination and testing within the time frame specified (see
6.2), to prove prior to starting production that his production methods will
produce separators that comply with requirements of this specification. Ex-
amination and tests shall be as specified in Section 4; and, unless otherwise
specified herein, all examinations and tests shall be conducted by the sup-
plier subject to surveillance and approval by the Government (see 6.4). When
specified (see 6.2), the Government will conduct any or all of the preproduc-
tion examination and tests (see 6.2).
